unfortunately, I have already paved the machine and installed 11.10 from
scratch.

  Incomplete

Bug description:
  was running kubuntu 10.04, relatively clean install, - updated to
  11.04 without difficulty and then immediately tried to upgrade to
  11.10, which stops with the message saying that it can't update
  because I'm running a beta version or something and prompts to send
  this bug report.

  have tried via do-release-upgrade and the GUI upgrade prompt.
