I see the problem.  There was an incorrect v ersion of perl (compiled
for a different architecture) in /usr/local/bin/perl and that was
apparently used during the installation of rsyslog .  I have removed
that bogus file and will re-run the udpate as soon as it finishes.  I'm
confident it will all work OK the next time.

Sorry for the bogus report (though it might be good to specifically use
/usr/bin/perl).

Bug description:
  While using Update Manager to update my Ubuntu 11.04 virtual machine
  running in VmWare Fusion on my iMac, a message popped up about an
  error.  The popup gave me the option of reporting the problem, which I
  did.  The update is still running.  Apparently  the newer rsyslog
  failed to install, but I have no idea what the problem was.  I hope
  the details automatically accompanying this report will tell you
  exactly what caused the problem.
