I see a quickly blinking '_' right before by grub menu using Ubuntu
11.10 so I am setting this bug report to Triaged.

  Hoping to get an entirely TFB (text-free boot) and FFB (flicker-free
  boot), I see a '_' on a black screen just after my bios. This is
  before I see my first purple screen.
