Title:
dist upgrade 8.10 to 9.04 hangs

Status in “dpkg” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: dpkg

Upgraded (kubuntu) from 8.10 to 9.04 via synaptic.
  on two 64-bit machines:
  1. Intel Pentium Dual E2160
  2. AMD Athlon 64 3200+

on BOTH machines, upgrade hangs and forces a hard restart.
after restart, must run 'dpkg -- configure -a', to complete the upgrade process. (otherwise, cannot login to kde).
