You can replace it with a backup, see /var/backup/dpkg.status.* or
/var/lib/dpkg/status-old. In any case I don't think that dpkg is
responsible of the file corruption.

  about dpkg/status:

   `Replaces' field, invalid package name `
  E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)
  A package failed to install.  Trying to recover:

  How can I fix or rebuild status file ?
