You can replace it with a backup, see /var/backup/dpkg.status.* or
/var/lib/dpkg/status-old. In any case I don't think that dpkg is
responsible of the file corruption.

A package failed to install. Trying to recover:

How can I fix or rebuild status file ?
System is 10.10 Meerkat, this is the first update attempt since the dist-upgrade on 10/10/10.
