I'm sorry that you had this experience with Ubuntu 10.04. Unfortunately
since your bug was reported against the greater "ubuntu" project, it
went unnoticed for quite some time; it's now been assigned to the
upstart package, which is probably also wrong but at least gets
engineering eyeballs on it.
Are you still experiencing this problem, or did you find a solution in
the meantime? (Or, I'm sad to ask, did you give up on Ubuntu because of
this bug?)
Were you able to boot the system using a different kernel, perhaps the
standard Ubuntu one?

Can you please attach the /etc/crypttab from this system? (Or if not,
can you describe how the system was set up wrt encrypted disks?)

from the description, it sounds like this is using the plymouth text
fallback instead of the graphical splash. There could be various
reasons for that, but we'd need to get the system booting first to be
able to diagnose further.

A reinstall may be the most effective way to restore bootability, but
yes, there is some risk that this will destroy the files currently
there. It would certainly wipe your package selections.

Title:
Init: cryptdisks-enable main process killed at boot, then infinite
hang
Status in “upstart” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
My well funtionctiong 10.04 on AMD64 with real-time kernel no longer
boots.
It starts the boot sequence, and seems ok. I get the GRUB pause, it indicates a generic kernel, not an rt kernel, but I'm not sure if that was always the case.
The screen goes black, then in relatively small grapchic font:
"init: cryptdisks-enalbe main process (880) killed by TERM signal"
It stays like that unless I hit an arrow key, then I get a scrolling
screen of udev warnings about future obsolete something...
Then, I get a small font graphic font about 1/3 of the way down the
screen
Ubuntu 10.04
. . . .
The four dots cycle in color to show "progress".
Then the sceen goes into standby, after about 5-10 minutes.
If I hit an arrow key, it wakes up with the udev warnings, again...
What could this possibly be?
And, how do I get my system back?
ps. I was at the big TEDx conference last week and was surprised to hear several people talking about the loss of quality in the recent Ubuntu releases. I was very surprised, since I am a strong Ubuntu supporter. However, I myself have not been very impressed with the 10.04 on my AMD64:
- ugly boot-up sequence,
- flashy login, but with no added value,
- and now faliure to boot...
I am more than happy to help in anyway I can. I am a computer
scientist, but Artificial Intelligence, not OS specialist..
Thanks,
Bob.
