[Bug 868668] [NEW] Installer hangs when progressing to timezone page for 45 sec

Public bug reported:
ubiquity 2.8.1.
This is on a network that requires an HTTP proxy to access anything. The details below are relevant to oem-config mode, but likely apply to installation as well.
Previous ubiquity versions in oneiric would hang indefinitely trying to
progress through the timezone page. This behavior has been resolved by
fetching geoname data asynchronously in ubiquity 2.8.0.
Unfortunately, on this network it still takes approximately 45 seconds
for the user to progress to the timezone page from the language page
before anything can be clicked.
If the process listing is observed after clicking the button in the
installer to proceed to the next page, both a rdate and a wget call can
be observed. Neither of these will succeed when connected to a network
like this.
I would suspect these synchronous calls will also cause problems on WLAN
hotspots that require a browser captcha and slow internet connections.
** Affects: ubiquity (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New
