Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  I am using Ubuntu 10.10 the Maverick Meerkat - released in October
  2010 and supported until April 2012.

  update manager fails and displays the following:

  (Could not initialize the package information

  An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package
  information.

  Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and
  include the following error message:

  'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with
  MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu
  .com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-updates_universe_binary-i386_Packages,
  E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.')

  package manager fails and displays the following:

  (An error occurred
  The following details are provided:

  E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
  E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-updates_universe_binary-i386_Packages
  E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
  E: _cache->open() failed, please report.)

  and Ubuntu Software Center fails to do anything at all
