I wonder if this isn't about friendly recovery and not the rescue source
package.

Title:
Rescue mode shows more partitions that those that are available as
  root partitions

Status in “friendly-recovery” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Status in “rescue” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: debian-installer

  Testing Maverick Alpha 3

I have the following partition map:

  sda1 (/)
  sda2
  ------> sda5 (swap)

In the rescue mode menu, it should only appear sda1 as possible root
file system, but instead it shows the three options (sda1, sda2 and
  sda5.

Obviously, only the first one does not fail when selected as root
  filesystem.
