Public bug reported:

Right now the only way start using a 64-bit version of ubuntu to is to
do a clean install. It would be better if there were an option in do-
release-upgrade that would allow you to upgrade from 32-bit version to
64-bit version.

** Affects: update-manager (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
