Unfortunately, we can't guess what is the case of do-release-upgrade failure because you provided neither dpkg log nor error message.
Can you please run "apport-collect 878099" from the Terminal to provide such information?

  The do-release-upgrade command did not successfully complete and my
  new ubuntu 11.10 is a mess, for example it has no terminal,and in the
  software center it shows that it is already installed
