seems that there may be a problem with your hardware.  I'd recommend
performing a back up and then investigate the situation.  Measures you
might take include checking cable connections and using software tools
to investigate the health of your hardware.  In the event that is is not
in fact an error with your hardware please set the bug's status back to

  usb ubuntu 11.10 32 bit installer crashed around 75% complete

Bug description:
  during instillation on a blank hard drive the installer crashed.
  Beyond it saying it crashed I didn't get any more information. the
  hard drive is a WD 350 GB SATA Hard Drive. the ubuntu version was
  10.11 32 bit.
