I gave the fix txapelgorri posted a try and was lucky enough that the
first directory I removed did the trick.

Removing ~/.cache/software-center  allowed me to start the Software
Center successfully immediately after it was removed.

After I restarted my computer a related issue that caused the
application lens to be empty was also resolved.
