Title:
livecd missing Intel Gig-E network driver

Status in “casper” package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
I downloaded Ubuntu 8.04.1 live cd and tried to boot my IBM Thinkpad
T42 laptop. This laptop (and many other thinkpad laptops) has an Intel
82540EP Gig-E wired network chip. The 8.04.1 livecd failed to load a
network driver for the chip. I also have a live cd from ubuntu 7.10
and that release does successfully load a network driver on this same
laptop. This chip is identified as the following from a lspci listing:

02:01.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corp. 82540EP Gigabit Ethernet
  Controller (Mobile) (rev 03)

I tried manually doing a modprobe of the igb and e1000e-ich9m drivers
that were present on the 8.04.1 cd under
/lib/modules/2.6.24-21-eeepc/ubuntu/ but neither of those seems to
have worked for the 82540EP chip in this Thinkpad T42 laptop. When I
boot the same laptop with the live cd from 7.10 the driver that gets
loaded and seems to work for this chip is e1000.
