*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 458482 ***
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/458482

This is NOT duplicate of Bug #458482

This is a regression issue, introduced at/around: Ubuntu 10.10

This is a Syslinux issue, not a boot issue (per se).

It is "not always possible" to boot and install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (desktop OR server), when the USB media has been created on Ubuntu 10.10 (or later) using Startup Disk Creator.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MaverickMeerkat/ReleaseNotes#Common%20Desktop%20Applications
" .. It is not possible to create Ubuntu 10.04 USB disks from the Startup Disk Creator in Ubuntu 10.10 due to a backwards incompatibility in the syslinux program."

NOTE: I am able to re-produced this issue, in the last 2 days, for
Ubuntu 11.10 + Unity, with latest patch/updates.

WORKAROUND: (works for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server & desktop)
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-mint-84/trying-to-boot-linux-mint-9-from-usb-flash-drive-vesamenu-c32-not-a-com32r-image-829397/#post4120867

Attempt to boot, either auto OR selecting USB from boot menu

When this SYSLINUX error message appears:
eg.
  vesamenu.c32: Not a COM32R image
  boot:

Type "help" <Enter>, then press <Enter> again.

( after several seconds, GUI demo/install menu appears )

Has there been any attempt to fix this?

Title:
Startup Disk Creator failing to create bootable USB with Ubuntu 10.04

Status in “usb-creator” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: usb-creator-gtk

I am using Startup Disk Creator to create a bootable USB. When I try to boot a machine from the USB disc that has been created I get the following message:
  "SYSLINUX 3.63 Debian-2008-07-15 EBIOS Copyright (C) 1994-2008 H. Peter Anvin
  boot:"

If you presse Enter the following message is received:

"Could not find kernel image: Linux"

The above results have been obtained on Dell Latitude D620 and Acer
  Aspire One

This is the same for all disc images tested so far. I have tried to
create images from the following ISOs with the same result:

  Ubuntu Lucid 32 bit desktop
  Ubuntu Lucid 64 bit desktop
  Ubuntu Karmic 32 bit desktop

My laptop Dell Latitude D620 is using Ubuntu Lucid 64 bit.
