I am setting this bug report to Won't Fix as 8.04.1as a desktop is no
longer supported.

Title:
  -8.04.1-desktop-i386 gnome fails to start

Status in “casper” package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
symptom: on Live-cd, login window appears (should not)
on installed state, login window appears (as should do)
on both, after login, the screen design shrinks away and login window reappears
and this repeats itself endless times.
I cannot do anything but to switch the power off.

  on MSI K9AGM (ATI RS485/SB600) with Athlon64 3800+
      symptom happens with ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386, -8.04-desktop-i386 and -8.04.1-desktop-AMD64
but does not happen with kubuntu-8.04-desktop-i386 (KDE3.5.9)
      nor with Slackware+gnome-2.12.

  on GA-M61PM-S2 (nVIDIA Geforce6100/nforce430) with Athlon64 3500+
the symptom does not happen on any of above ubuntu packages.

  on MSI4AM-LSR (KM400/400A) with athlon XP 2500+
the symptom does not happen on above packages but resolution must be adjusted manually.

Hence, I assume there is some internal problem between ubuntu-8.04 and gnome but not with KDE,
which reveals itself on this particular mainboard/chipset.

I would very much like to see this problem fixed as "workaroud" is not ubuntu style and in fact
one cannot but switch off the machine.

  Thank you very much.
