Which install method are you using (desktop/server/alternate CD,
netboot, USB) and which architecture? Did you boot into UEFI mode to
install?

I'm not sure that "the process is not adequately documented" is grub's
fault - see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFIBooting for a great
deal of info on setting up grub with Ubuntu.

Title:
installer lies about success installing grub2 on efi

Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: grub2

installing natty on an efi system nothing suggests grub-install needs
the efi partition mounted as /boot/efi and nothing suggests either the
user it failed until one reboots and ubuntu does not boot.

the magic behind /boot/efi isn't documented anywhere either leading to
  huge frustration to users.
