[Bug 882252] [NEW] 11.10 installer doesn't carry-over bootloader old options

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

For background, my system was originally setup as Gentoo. When
subsequently I installed Ubuntu 11.04, I installed the GRUB2 bootloader
into a partion sda# rather than simply to sda, and I put a chainloader
option into my original Gentoo-based GRUB1 bootloader to allow booting
to Ubuntu (this to avoid mess of having grub2 make my other distros
unbootable with its esoteric script-based mechanism - I frequently
install other distros to test).

During 11.10 installation (from amd64 CD), which recognized both Gentoo
and Ubuntu 11.04, I selected the option to totally replace 11.04 and
leave everything else alone.

I expected, on reboot, to get my original Gentoo GRUB1 bootloader,
select the chainload option, and see my shiny new 11.10 Grub2
bootloader, to then select my kernel, etc.

Instead, I went straight to the GRUB2 loader, meaning that my MBR was
overwritten, and 11.10 installer didn't check my original bootloader
settings I chose when I installed the previous version.

** Affects: update-manager (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Confirmed
