Just want to say, while the bug report above is convoluted and weird (even by my standards and I don't know how to file bug reports) One of the issues mentioned has appeared on my system too (32bit, upgraded from 11.04). This is that there is no search field in the software centre. 
I have little knowledge of Command Lines or other geeky things, but if there are simple instructions which I can follow to help you guys out to determine this issue, give us a yell. Thanks again; otherwise the system's great :)
