Would be nice to know what the fix is that was discussed on IRC?
Got kind of the same error while installing oneiric alternate from USB device (created with unetbootin):
ubuntu 11.10 as well as on
xubuntu 11.10
pkgsel version:
pkgsel_0.34ubuntu2
installation plattform:
lenovo thinkpad x121e (amd version)
Log says something like this:
[...blabla..."some required packages have not yet been created"...blabla...]
in-target: The following packages have unmet dependencies.
in-target:  libpurple0 : Depends: libsasl2-modules but is not installable
in-target:  xserver-xorg-video-all : Depends: xserver-xorg-video-ati but it is not installable
in-target:  xubuntu-desktop : Depends: libsasl2-modules but it is not installable
in-target:               Recommends: [....]
in-target: E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
in-target: tasksel: aptitude failed (100)
main-menu[344]: WARNING **: Configuring 'pkgsel' failed with error code 1
main-menu[344]: WARNING **: Menu item 'pkgsel' failed.
[...some INFO...]
main-menu[344]: DEBUG: resolver (libnewt0.52): package doesn't exist (ignored)

  Fix Released
Bug description:
  Text installer log says 
  tasksel: aptitude failed (100)
  Configuring 'pkgsel' failed with error code 1
  And packaged 
  libnewt0.52, ext2-modules, efi-modules doesn't exist 
  After this execution installer crashes and turns back to the Ubuntu
  installer main menu
