Thanks to Sérgio for his comments. Your were correct in assuming
insufficient space on the master drive. I was able to resolve this
problem by using the advanced partitioning option during the install. I
put the boot folder "/boot" on a partition of the master disk and the
root folder "/" on a partition of the slave disk. After that the install
ran without any more problems and get the appropriate menu to select
between windows or ubuntu at boot time.
Thanks a million. The case can be closed.

Title:
ubuntu 11.04 installation crashed
Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
I was installing Ubuntu 11.04 on my window XP desktop. The system has 2 disk drives. The first disk on which resides windows does not have sufficient space for Ubuntu but the slave disk 15GB is all free. I want to choose between either OS system at boot time but I guess this option on the Ubuntu main menu ignores the slave disk during the installation process.
I don't know how to attach 2 files to this report. It only allows me to attach 1 file.
