OK.
>From the version numbers I assume plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text derived
from plymouth-0.8.2. Thus the documentation for plymouth-0.8.2 should
suffer. But:
lucid: /lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-text/ubuntu-text.plymouth:
![Plymouth Theme]
!Name=Ubuntu Text
!Description=Text mode theme based on ubuntu-logo theme
!ModuleName=ubuntu-text
maverik: /lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-text/ubuntu-text.plymouth:
![Plymouth Theme]
!Name=Ubuntu Text
!Description=Text mode theme based on ubuntu-logo theme
!ModuleName=ubuntu-text
natty: /lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-text/ubuntu-text.plymouth:
![Plymouth Theme]
!Name=Ubuntu Text
!Description=Text mode theme based on ubuntu-logo theme
!ModuleName=ubuntu-text
!
![ubuntu-text]
!title=Ubuntu 11.04
!black=0x2c001e
!white=0xffffff
!brown=0xff4012
!blue=0x988592
Now change the first two to read the same as the ubuntu-text.plymouth
found on natty (copy should suffice). Recreate your initrd, reboot. If
the description for plymouth-0.8.2 apply, both, lucid and maverick
should show a text splash telling about "Ubuntu 11.04". They do not.
Both keep displaying "Ubuntu 10.04" and "Ubuntu 10.10".
Now change the text given in ubuntu-text.plymouth to something you'd like better. Maybe "Hi this is Ubuntu booting! Please wait --- I'm ready in a while!":
![Plymouth Theme]
!Name=Ubuntu Text
!Description=Text mode theme based on ubuntu-logo theme
!ModuleName=ubuntu-text
!
![ubuntu-text]
!title=Hi this is Ubuntu booting! Please wait --- I'm ready in a while!
!black=0x2c001e
!white=0xffffff
!brown=0xff4012
!blue=0x988592
Copy that the other systems, rebuild your initrd, reboot.
lucid: Ubuntu 10.04
maverick: Ubuntu 10.10
natty: Hi this is Ubuntu booting! Please wait --- I'm ready in a while!
All versions claim to have plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text-0.8.2xxx
installed. All claim ubuntu-text derived from plymouth-text-0.8.2, but
why do they behave different then?
If you say: they are different, why arn't three different descriptions
available? Only one description is available, covering, at least for
lucid and maverick, features only implemented by the natty version?

Title:
plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text having the same version number ...
Status in “plymouth” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
The package plymouth-theme-ubunut-text has the same version number
over a variety of Ubuntu versions:
10.04.3: 0.8.2-2ubuntu2.2
10.10: 0.8.2-2ubuntu2.2
11.04: 0.8.2-2ubuntu2.2
11.10: 0.8.2-2ubuntu2.2
but looking at the binaries there are differences:
10.04.3: no configurable options (section "[ubuntu-text]" in ubuntu-text.plymouth). All strings are hardcoded within /lib/plymouth/ubuntu-text.so
10.10: same as above, but created with an other compiler(?).
11.04: configurable options.
Looking close to the binaries, they do not corespond to what is loaded
by "apt-get source plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text". This delivers the
actual sources, with configurable options from file "ubuntu-
text.plymouth".
How come all those binary packages are flaging the same version
number, but clearly compiled from different sources?
