This bug got fixed in the latest friendly-recovery (in Oneiric) as it's
now ensured that friendly-recovery starts before anything else (that
includes mountall).

** Changed in: friendly-recovery (Ubuntu)
       Status: Confirmed => Fix Released

Title:
CRITICAL! Karmic: Recovery mode broken, probably due to FAT fsck
  problems

Status in “friendly-recovery” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Choosing the recovery mode from the new grub menu makes the system
crash (see attachment). The display (and input) gets corrupted when I
try to choose the appropriate option from the recovery menu. I think
it happens when the cursor touches the "update grub bootloader" entry.
Following this, I can type, but don't see any characters on the
screen. And the computer does not recognise all the keys. For
instance, saying "ls" makes it complain it does not know the command
  "s".

I have several partitions on my hd: 1 ext4 (the Ubuntu that's
  running), 1 ext3 (Ubuntu 9.04), 1 FAT32 (shared data, that's sda5
which you can read complaints about in the attachment), 1 NTFS
  (WinXP).

Anything else you need to know?
