I would suggest having wicd-curses available since it can also handle
wireless connections. I created an recovery mode add-on to start it:

Title:
netroot doesn't work in most cases
Status in “friendly-recovery” package in Ubuntu:
Triaged
Bug description:
Binary package hint: friendly-recovery
the 7th entry in recovery-menu (root) seems to me like the 6th
(netroot) because when I enter the netroot one I expect to have full
netwrok support, while I enter root session I would expect that no
network device is enabled, instead even for root session it is
enabled.
