This is fixed in oneiric, there is now a step to setup a wifi connection
during installation.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: ubiquity

  When selecting a wifi that requires a password, no dialog is shown,
  and no connection is established. If you exit the installation and
  enter the live environment the wifi password dialog is shown
  eminently.
