You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When I try to install Ubuntu on a PC with an external HDD that's
connected via USB, I can't select the internal one to install Ubuntu on.
I have to disconnect the external one(s), and then go back a few steps
in the installation procedure until I see the screen that asks me
whether I want to install Ubuntu next to Windows, replace it, or create
my own partitions. Once I select to install next to Windows again, my
internal HDD is displayed, and everything works fine from there.

This phenomenon happens on all the PC's that I've tried Ubuntu on, which
are:

1. MSI desktop system, bought in 2003, with Windows XP,
2. Medion laptop, bought in 2009, with Windows 7,
3. Acer Aspire 7250, bought in 2012, with Windows 7.

I'm typing this on PC number 3.
