I've tried recreating this bug with Precise and was unable to, given the
information you've provided. Please either a) upgrade and test or b)
increase the verbosity of the steps to recreate it so we can try again.

Bug description:

  Doing a little testing related to
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/660171. At comment 4, it was
  asked to add "maverick" to sources.

  Due to my poor skills, I opened Synaptic Package Manager, Sources tab
  and added the string "deb http://maverick.canonical.com karmic". I
  believe the string is well formed but otherwise incorrect.

  On Reload, Synaptic Package Manager subsequently crashed. Attempting
  to launch Synaptic Package Manager also results in a crash. See
  attached.

  I believe http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/synaptic is the package information.
