Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Jaunty reached EOL on October 23, 2010.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:

I've tried recreating this bug with Oneiric and was unable to, given the
information you've provided. Please either a) upgrade and test or b)
increase the verbosity of the steps to recreate it so we can try again.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

Title:
Intrepid -> Jaunty upgrade: dpkg sub process seg faulted, leaving
update-manager in unresponsive state and an unkillable dpkg process
preventing manual intervention
Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Binary package hint: update-manager
On a fully up to date Intrepid install selected to upgrade to Jaunty using the update-manager.
Upgrade proceeded as normal, channels updated, packages to be updated, added or removed made and all downloads made. During package installation when performing config of libnspr4 executing a call to rm caused a segfault and kernel oops. This left the update-manager gui locked and unresponsive, also the current dpkg process was left in a Ds state and was unkillable by either sig 15 or 9. To resolve I needed to reboot, run dpkg --configure -a, apt-get install -f and finally apt-get dist-upgrade to complete. I'm an experienced linux user but a novice shouldn't need to delve to command-line to rectify what is generally a automatically resolvable issue.
