No easy *and correct* fix is known at this time, only workarounds that
break other things.

Title:
ubuntu includes btrfs, but does not support it

Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
btrfs has been a choosable filesystem for a while now, but has been
unusable due to ubuntu refusing to include support for it in grub2.
Every time a user tries to boot into a btrfs filesystem, they get a
sparse file not allowed error. This bug has been known and easily
fixable for a while, but ubuntu refuses to properly support btrfs.
