[Bug 988069] [NEW] GUI failed to respond

i am not nearly technical enough to explain this in detail, but
essentially my GUI crashed. the cursor would move, but none of the
programs would open or respond. so i set about trying to re-install
Ubuntu 11.10 over the existing copy and while trying to set up the new
account, the installation process crashed.
