[Bug 988263] [NEW] Installation fails without further explanation at "Select and install software"

The installation appears to progress normally but fails at the step
"select and install software"

1. Download Alternate amd+mac image: http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/214/builds/15994/testcases
2. Verify md5 sums
3. Burn to CD-RW
4. Verify burn
5. Progress through installation

I have tried with two different media.  The Desktop image from the same
time installs just fine, so did earlier Alternate images.
