Title:
package samba 2:3.5.8~dfsg-1ubuntu2.3 failed to install/upgrade:
subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 3

Status in “samba” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Whilst performing an upgrade of packages (via System > Administration
  > Update Manager), upgrade of the Samba package failed per the
  following crash report.

Attempts to correct using apt-get install -f did not resolve.

All other systems and services working perfectly.

Reviewing the error messages generated by apt-get below, I am unable
  to diagnose.

PID file /var/run/mediaserver.pid is definitely not found, and all
services by that name or other possible ones (twonkymedia) are
  confirmed stopped and not running.
