did the log say what kind of hardware issues we are talking about? cause it
seems like i probably need to look into that

  i am not nearly technical enough to explain this in detail, but
  essentially my GUI crashed.  the cursor would move, but none of the
  programs would open or respond.  so i set about trying to re-install
