I forgot to mention, write rights are ok on my /home. User is the same
as well, but UID is probably different. Guest session works (!).

Title:
12.4 install with existing 10.4 /home prevents login

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
After a fresh install of 12.4 RC using my existing /home from 10.4
(separate partition), the graphical login did not work. When I enter
my password and hit return, for a very short period some text messages
pop up, the first line saying

"coul not write bytes - broken pipe" (or similar)

followed by some typical system messages indicated by the asterisk ("
  * stopping blabla"). Then I'm back at the login screen. Terminal login
works just fine. Using grub with the alternative boot (how is it
called? same kernel, debug stuff) shows the same issue when I just
"resume" and failsafe x mode does not work due to the graphics card
  driver, I guess.

Due to limited time, I'm unable to provide more information - sorry,
got to work on this machine right now (backup home, reinstall and
  format /home).
