By specifying the root and swap partitions only, kubuntu is now
installing (I avoided the crash).  Partitions for home and tmp are
already on the hard drive.  So under Plan B, after kubuntu is installed
successfully using the simplified partitioning scheme, I will move home
and tmp to the separate partitions, and modify fstab to make it
permanent.
