As you've discovered there was a syntax error in your sources.list file
for equinox ppa.  This may have been due to a bug in add-apt-repository
as it looks like the 'm' in 'main' is missing from that sources.list.
I'll move the bug to that pacakge.

  New

Bug description:
  i just added these ppa

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tiheum/equinox
  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/themes

  and suddenly i get this error in update manager..

  An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package
  information.

  Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and
  include the following error message:

  'E:Type 'ain' is not known on line 3 in source list
  /etc/apt/sources.list.d/tiheum-equinox-precise.list, E:The list of
  sources could not be read., E:The package lists or status file could
  not be parsed or opened.'

  
  There is nothing at folder '/var/log/dist-upgrade/'...
