@Simon -- Thanks for that backport. Subversion 1.7 is needed to get
JavaHL 1.7 which is needed to run Subclipse 1.8, which is needed if you
want to do a "Project->New->Maven->Check Out from SCM" and have it work!

Title:
[needs-packaging] Provide Subversion 1.7.x in the Ubuntu Software Repo

Status in “subversion” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in “subversion” package in Debian:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Current in the Ubuntu repos only Subversion 1.6.12 is provided. And as far as I can see this version is planned for 12.04, too.
This version is outdated and only partially supported by the Apache team (see http://subversion.apache.org/docs/release-notes/). Further it should be noted that this version has new features, which make the life a bit easier with svn.

The source is available @ http://subversion.apache.org/download/

So please package and provide subversion in version 1.7.x in the
  upcoming Ubuntu 12.04.
