Thanks for you help.  I renamed the sources.list to sources.old and did
an apt-get install update manager.  This appears to have fixed the
issue, but I have attached the .old file to assist in troubleshooting
why it happened in the first place.

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  There's a red icon in my upper right task bar region that looks like
  an international stop sign.  When I click on it, it says to file a bug
  report against the update manager with this line following:
  'E:Malformed line 51 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist
  parse)'
