If it is the case that, once connected to the VPN, you can resolve
Internet names but not VPN names, then you may be encountering bug
#1003842. In that case a good workaround is to disable the local
forwarding nameserver.
Here's how to disable the local forwarding nameserver.
Open a terminal.
In the terminal run
sudo gedit /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf
In the gedit window, comment out the line "dns=dnsmasq" (put a '#'
character at the beginning of the line) and save the file. Then run
sudo restart network-manager

Bug description:
After the resolvconf overhaul in Ubuntu 12.04, DNS resolution no
longer works for VPN connections. Network Manager is able to connect
to the VPN, but no domain names resolve.
Please let me know what is needed to make this bug report more
helpful.
