Title:
After install on USB disk, the computer does not work without the USB
  disk

Status in “grub” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I wanted to give my friend a cool Ubuntu installation.

  Latest ubuntu 7.10

So since he wanted to keep XP, he gave me his extra USB Hard drive
that he did not use. So I launched the Ubuntu CD and made one Linux
partition of the whole USB disk.

After installation I rebooted but now Windows was missing in the GRUB
  list :(

When plugging the USB disk out I directly get the error 17. No boot
  loader there.

So when I thought that the computer would be safe, installing it on an
external drive, actually it broke two things:

  - grub has no windows in the startup
  - The computer can not be started without the USB disk plugged in.

This is a BIG problem, and i guess this is the way many beginners do
to protect them selves. Has to be solved.

I expect it to work when I plug the USB disk out, no hassle. And
without the USB disk inside, I do not want the grub to start at all,
  just win xp
