In my case killing 'modprobe xfs' does not solve the problem.  In fact,
removing 'xfs' from 10filesystems makes it hang on 'modprobe jfs' (jfs
being the one that comes after xfs normally), trying to repeatedly read
from /sys/module/jfs/initstate

Also, I bumped into this problem by trying to run update-grub manually
(rather than by trying to install a package).

  memtest was the last listed founded O/S, then os-probe seemed to hang

  killing "modprobe xfs" let the grub installation continue and complete
