Title:
system update should be run unatteded
Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
Binary package hint: update-manager
Note: This is an enhancement request!
I performed an update to 9.04 beta
I would like to see the option in update-manager to run unatteded
since downloading and configuring takes a lot of time. The best would
be to run this process during night time or absence.
During configuration of upgraded packages, the update-manager asks to
keep or replace changed system wide settings. If the user doesn't
select a choice the installation stops.
I would suggest to
* add a option "Perform unattended upgrade" to the update-manager with the following characteristics
* perform upgrade with default options not showing any warnings like for packages which are no more maintained etc.
* upgrade all new packages by installing the new system wide configuration options
* backup all configuration options changed by the user
* save all warnings like for packages which are no more maintained etc.
* when the upgrade has finished, the computer shall shut down
* at the first log-in after the upgrade, open a wizard program that
* shows all saved warnings like for packages which are no more maintained etc.
* offer the user to reconfigure the wide configuration options or re-install his changes
=> this could reduce the time a user effectively spends for an upgrade by leaving the system unattended
=> this could reduce the energy because the computer will automatically shut down when the process is finished.
Thanks for looking into this!
