"There is no reason to uninstall nvidia-common. It doesn't conflict with
the NVIDIA installer."

Ok, fair enough. But can you give me a valid reason why ubuntu-desktop
should depend on nvidia-common? It doesn't make sense from a basic
sanity point of view, does it? In addtion, I have seen an issue where
people have tried:

sudo apt-get remove --purge nvida-*

To remove nvidia drivers, and they ended up removing ubuntu-desktop by
mistake. This puts the user into a potentially bad state. I would urge
you to please reconsider this as a bug.

Title:
  Ubuntu-desktop depends on nvidia-common

Status in “ubuntu-meta” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
The ubuntu-desktop package in Oneiric depends on nvidia-common. I
wouldn't have a problem with this normally, but I usually uninstall
nvidia-common to install NVIDIA's blob driver. When you try to
uninstall nvidia-common it wants to uninstall ubuntu-desktop
