Thanks for checking kpartx.  GParted removed use of kpartx in version
0.8.1, which was adopted in Oneiric Ubuntu (11.10).

Carla, would you be able to provide the results of the following
command?

     sudo blkid -c /dev/null

Bug description:
  I have Precise Pangolin Alpha 1 with all updates installed.
  When launching Gparted it continues to scan for devices and never starts.
  I tried as normal user, as root, with and without a usb key attached.
