[Bug 913554] [NEW] Directories are identified as files

Public bug reported:

After newly installing Kubuntu 11.10 to a usb-drive, i get

"error: not a directory"
"rescue shell>"

The new root is on "hd0,msdos1", so if i do "ls (hd0,msdos1)/" i get a
list of files and directories but the strange thing is, that some
directories are shown up wrongly as files (/boot, /lib and some others)?

It seems, that grub can't access it's directory /boot/grub because it
identifies /boot as a file instead of a directory?

I tried boot-repair, i tried update-grub from a chroot, but nothing
worked out...

** Affects: grub2 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
