Run these:
sudo mv /var/lib/dpkg/status /var/lib/dpkg/status-tmp
then...
sudo mv /var/lib/dpkg/status-old /var/lib/dpkg/status
Then try the 'sudo apt-get update'

Incomplete
Bug description:
An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package
information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and
include the following error message:
'W:Encountered status field in a non-version description, E:Malformed
1st word in the Status line, E:Error occurred while processing amarok-
common (UsePackage2), E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status,
E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
Ubuntu release
~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 10.10
Release: 10.10
Package version
~$ apt-cache policy package-manager
Segmentation fault
Ubuntu - bug didn't work; gave further error
Could not open location 'file:///home/john/ubunter%20-bug'
error stating file '/home/john/ubuntu -
bug': No such file or directory
