Definitely an installation problem. I tried unsuccessfully to install Xubuntu 12.04, Lubuntu 12.04, Lubuntu 11.10.
My workaround : (re)load Xubuntu 11.10, upgrade to Xubuntu 12.04 (OK), load lxde (Lubuntu functionality, OK).

My old (beloved) notebook : Compaq Evo N600c, Pentium 3-M, 768 MB RAM,
ATI Mobility Radeon

  New

Bug description:
  I downloaded lubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386.iso, md5 verified it, made USBLive using LinuxLive USB Creator.
  Using USBLive, "Verifying Files" reports an error in 1 file...
  Run in Live Mode without problems, Internet connection OK.
  Launch "Install Lubuntu 12.04", The beginning is OK, but the process freezes after the apparition of the splash screen.

  Others users had similar difficulties : Ubuntu Forums / Installation &
  Upgrades / [lubuntu] Problems making working Lubuntu Live USB

  Best workaround : install Lubuntu 11.04 and upgrade...
