I had the same problem after updating from Oneiric to Precise. I fixed it the following way:
1. Start synaptic,
2. Search for fontconfig
3. Right-click on fontconfig-config and choose Reinstall
4. Click the Apply button in the toolbar, notice two windows appear. First shows the progress, and the second shows an error. The window showing the error basically tells "fontconfig-config subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1" at the top. Close it. Now click "Details" in the other window and start reading what happened. In my case the script failed to delete /var/lib/defoma/fontconfig.d. I had to delete it manually, then I redid steps 1-4 (this time it worked fine).
