I had a similar problem, but it might be subtly different. The upgrade
hung after printing:

Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ...
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.0.0-17-generic

After a half hour of no discernible activity, I aborted the process with
Ctrl+C on the terminal. There was an error message, followed by
notification that the module was upgraded, but the post-installation
tool did not run.

I believe the kernel did not actually upgrade, but will settle for the
minor victory of booting to a working desktop.

$ uname -a
Linux boatVPM-Linux 3.0.0-17-generic #30-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 8 17:34:21 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Prior to this, boot attempts left the terminal, still in text mode,
looping on:

task modprobe:639 blocked ...

Completing the previously aborted install with 'dpkg --configure -a'
brought the system to the conditions noted above.
