By the way, I note that this is more of a problem in Ubuntu than in
Debian because consistency and coherence of the theming is much more of
a focus in Ubuntu.

Title:
Installing desktop-base forces a GRUB background image

Status in “grub2” package in Debian:

Bug description:
As described here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=608263
When the desktop-base package is installed, you will *always* get a
background image for GRUB, and you will lose the pretty aubergine hue
during boot. This cannot be changed without editing
/etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme.
The GNOME desktop depends on desktop-base, so installing GNOME will
cause this issue.
